Last time I saw Tangerine, my focus was on its storytelling and shooting format. I never dived deep into the transgender sex work aspect of it until this time. Now, I can see the relationship between two white male and two black transgendered female and one white female. Despite their gender and sexuality difference, a commonality is their lower-class status.
The romance quarrel in this film is not only dependent on who is more good-looking, but also hinting at the subtle racial/sexual relationship. Like many articles of this week are talking about, social perception on different race, sex, class and many other identities affect people’s position in a relationship. The standards are formed by people who are in power, mostly people who are in the majority group. These people then make rules that follow their willings. When one’s identity ally with the ones in power, one is empowered. Which also means, people who process multiple disadvantage identities usually face more obstacles in our society than the ones who are more powerful.
